Commissioning Art

I have been doing commissions for corporate and private art patrons throughout the United States for over 25 years. These commissions include formal and informal portraits, architecture (homes, public buildings, country clubs, historic sites), and other custom art.

If you are considering commissioning a painting, here's what you can expect:

COMMUNICATIONS
We will meet or communicate via phone, mail or email several times during the process. It's very important to understand your needs and create the work of art you expect and one that you will be proud to own. This requires communications.

PORTRAITS
Samples of recent commissioned work can be seen in the Portrait Gallery. The best scenario is to have the subject sit/pose for me several times and to take photos to work from in between sittings. Sometimes long distances makes this impossible. In this case, photos are used exclusively to create the portrait. From several photographs we will agree on one pose. During the painting process, you will receive several emails showing the work in progress. I'll email a final image for your approval. After several weeks of drying (in the case of an oil painting), the finished art will be sent or delivered to you.

ARCHITECTURE
Renderings and paintings of private homes are very popular. See my Home Gallery for samples of work. Watercolor and/or pen and ink are usually the preferred medium. If the home is local, I'll take photos of the home, with close-ups of special features. From these, I'll complete the painting and deliver it. If the home is out of town, I'll ask you to send photos by mail or email. We'll discuss the best angles and choose a photo. I'll email you an image of the completed work, and then send you the completed art.

SPECIAL REQUESTS
You may have a particular wall or space that needs a unique piece of art. I'll work with you to incorporate your needs, to create a piece that is the right size, color, subject matter and medium.

PRICING
Once I have all your requirements, I will give you a quote for the finished work. Because of the consultation time, preliminary sketches, travel, and photography that may be involved, you can expect to pay more for a commissioned piece than art you see in my gallery. A 20% non-refundable payment is required prior to beginning the commission.
